Hunter Quarries is seeking an accomplished and strategically minded General Manager to lead a Tier 1 quarrying operation of regional significance. With a 2-million-tonne per annum extraction consent and a recently extended operational lifespan, the business is positioned for long-term stability, continued growth, and sustained contribution to the Hunter region’s construction and infrastructure sectors.
As a Tier 1 Quarry, the organisation operates at substantial scale across multiple sites, supported by a workforce of 65–70 employees and regular contractors. The General Manager will oversee all aspects of operational performance, strategic direction, safety leadership, compliance, financial management, and people development, working closely with an experienced and multidisciplinary Senior Leadership Team.
About the Role
Reporting directly to the Directors, the General Manager is responsible for ensuring the safe, sustainable, and compliant performance of the quarrying business while driving operational excellence and long-term strategic outcomes. Key areas of accountability include:
Strategic Leadership & Governance
- Developing, implementing, and reviewing the organisation’s strategic plan in consultation with the Directors.
- Ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, environmental licences, consent conditions, and regulatory standards.
- Leading a proactive safety culture with measurable year-on-year improvements in WHS performance.
Financial & Commercial Management
- Overseeing financial performance, including budgeting, cashflow, working capital, and capital investment programs.
- Ensuring financial reporting reflects a true and fair view of operational performance.
- Maintaining robust financial systems with appropriate controls, governance, and separation of duties.
Operational Excellence
- Ensuring production meets quality specifications and stock availability requirements.
- Leading operational planning and resource allocation across plant, equipment, and labour.
- Overseeing transport operations to ensure Chain of Responsibility compliance while meeting commercial delivery standards.
People & Culture Leadership
- Developing and maintaining an organisational structure capable of delivering the strategic plan.
- Leading a high-performing Senior Leadership Team, providing mentorship, guidance, and professional development.
- Overseeing workforce planning, competency frameworks, and succession planning to ensure long-term capability.
Market Development & Growth
- Leading strategic business development planning and contributing market insight.
- Ensuring alignment between market opportunities, production capacity, and sales strategy.
Key Challenges and Opportunities
The role requires a leader able to balance long-term strategic decision-making with operational demands in a dynamic environment. Critical challenges include navigating an evolving regulatory landscape, supporting workforce capability and engagement, and ensuring the business remains competitive and sustainable in the years ahead.
With solid operational foundations, strong market presence, and long-term consent security, the successful candidate will have a substantial opportunity to shape the direction and performance of the organisation.

- Experience leading operations within a regulated environment.
- High-level analytical, strategic, and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively across all stakeholder groups.
Experience within the quarrying industry is highly regarded but not essential for candidates with strong adjacent-industry leadership credentials.
